Jonathon Gold seems like an average man if you were to see him walking down the street. His appearance seems to be the last of his worries but if you look passed that he has a lot more to offer and learn from. His passion for food has led him to explore a different side of L.A. that no other food critique has dared to explore. Jonathon Gold is the first food critique I have known to explore the little hole in the walls of Los Angeles and find the hidden gems of L.A. Although those restaurants can offer excellent dishes, with professional chefs, this documentary shows that not all the best chefs are found in those restaurants but, instead in a restaurant that offers history and character in the streets of L.A.. I personally have always enjoyed little hole in the walls or taco trucks in random corners more than those “bougie” five-star expensive restaurants. The food always seems so much more authentic to me and the neighborhoods around it only bring more culture to the whole experience. Coming from a Latino background, I always enjoy a cultural environment that makes me feel more at home and makes me feel warm inside. These kinds of small mom and pop restaurants seem to be overlooked because of the lack of the financial backing of big advertising but Jonathon Gold showcases that even without having the financial backing of big advertising, these small rest can convey as much variety, taste, and culture as those restaurants found in magazines or television. Also, I think that these kinds of restaurants are a big part of our society in Los Angeles. In conclusion, Jonathon Gold draws a correlation between food and philosophy judging by his innate capabilities of finding great pleasures in less popular or polished establishments to find hidden gems, we can infer that he himself might be a hidden gem for Los Angeles.
