unless you're a biker, you've probably never paid these much attention. these bike racks are great not only for their security, but also for their aesthetically pleasing design. i also prefer these bike racks to other racks due to the ease in which i can position my bike before i lock it. when there are no bikes secured to it, the rack still serves as a beautifying structure to its location!
