What are the client’s business goals for the site?
- The client's goals is to boost online orders & to inform people that dine-in is now available - although the latter is ill-advisable.
Who is the Target Audience?
- Those who live in the area, and specifically those who have a preference for Mexican cuisine. Especially those who need delivery, as the option for that is in the middle of the page.
What questions need to be answered in order to complete this project?
- What doesn't work about the site? What does?
- How do other competitor sites compare?
What tasks do we need to complete in order to successfully design this website?
- Redesign the original site.
- Look for peer feedback.
- Test for bugs at every stage.
What doesn't work about it?
- Font is too varied all over the website, the color is also white on gray background, making the text inconsistent and difficult to read.
- Lack of pricing & ingredient information alongside the food on the front page. Only shown when you go into the Catering tab. Having a difficult time assessing why menu & catering are two different tabs except for pricing differences.
- Clunky, big slideshow of offers rather than a seamless transition, no more additional detail already available, must click through more to read about it.
- The colors don't seem to mesh, there's no obvious cohesive theme, as the tabs all seem to be chunked together oddly.
What works about it?
- Site works well on mobile, arguably is better to navigate on mobile than on a desk/laptop.
- The header neatly has all necessary tabs + social media icons already listed.
- Where there is information easily available, it is detailed.
- Map location is easy to understand & is visual.
What is the timeframe for this project?
Competitors:
These next 3 restaurants were chosen based on proximity & cuisine theme, making them La Estrella's top competitors.
Chile Verde
- Chile Verde has a clear, easy-to-read header that holds everything that a website needs, from navigation to contact information. The menu has an extensive list of food & description - but lacks the pricing. The simplicity of the sight makes it easy to navigate, which is a bonus in its favor, as well as boasting bright and colorful pictures of their enticing food. The only thing is - the header takes up so much of the site space!
El Gallo Giro
- El Gallo Giro has the most stylized website of the three, making it the most eye-catching based on the textures and bright colors chosen. However, the fonts are serif and thus automatically harder to read on a computer screen. The text also sits on textured background and clashing color combinations. Their menu pops out as a PDF which contains a nice, compact way of seeing the 2-page dynamic menu. Social medias, links, and disclaimers all appear on the page in good order.
EL Indio Mexicano Restaurant
- El Indio Mexicano Restaurant actually has a sleek design that directs the user to scroll down the menu, this makes it feel seamless for the most part. However, each time you visit the site, a pop-up for a family pack meal shows up. Not the worst aspect, but repeated visits make this a bit tiring to exit out of. Fonts used are consistent - and there's a style even in how photos are presented. However, the menu button takes an extra two clicks until you see the entire list. Helpfully, there are prices and it seems more than functional. It's just always better when someone has to click at least one less time to get to what they would like to see.
