While I'm not sure how common they are, I think pocket doors are highly underrated. They slide into the wall and have an edge pull (image 3) that allows you to easily pull them out. Sometimes they have a groove on the door frame where you can hook the edge pull into, allowing the door to stay in place. The edge pull and door frame groove are particularly useful if you need to barricade a pet or small child that likes to open doors.
