Photograph Portrait Reference Scans 📠 📠 📠

As the first phase of our vector portrait composition project, you need to gather some visual reference material that we will use to start our creative process.

Step 1: Find 👀 🔎 🔦

• Five (5) photography books with portraits from the RWU library
  • Photographic monographs are on the third floor, near the clock tower
• Full-color required (no black and white portraits allowed)
• Full-page portrait photographs (avoid full-spread images with gutter breaks)
• You are searching for interesting, unique, exciting portrait photographs

Step 2: Scan 📠 📠 📠

• Select the most interesting, unique, and exciting portrait from each book
• Scan each of the five (5) portraits using the flatbed scanner in the Design Center (one portrait scan from each book)
• Scans must be made on the Epson Perfection V850 Pro (flatbed scanner in HUM 223 and HUM 222)
• Scans cannot be made with your phone or any other scanner on campus

Step 3: Experimental Glitch-Scan 🫠 🫠 🫠

• Then, using the “Glitch-Scan” technique that we demonstrated during class, create an additional five (5) “Glitch-Scan” versions of the five (5) photographic portraits that you scanned for Step 2
• Try moving the book horizontally, vertically, up and down, or spinning it while the scanhead is moving to create different “Glitch-Scan” experiments
