Bar A At Her Met

While looking through the wesite there plenty of really elegant pictures, great selection in typography, and colors. But during that examination the website lacked focus. At times it felt like the site was trying to sell a social experience rather than food, but other times it felt like it was actually trying to sell you food. The site really needs help with prioritizing what it wants for the business, and with that information architecture.

Visual Design

Let’s start with Visual Design. The Landing page needs much to be desired, by that I mean something to grab the users attention. What we currently have is webpage with repeating content with multiple call to action buttons, and no navigations. I believe cinematic video of the establishment would work great as the background. As stated before the picture(on the landing page) is extremely bright, it makes it extremely difficult to read the white colored content displayed.

Content

  • The photograph is amazing, and the food looks really appealing
  • While the story of the couple is interesting, thinking about the customer and what they get out of it is our main priority.
  • If the focus is to sell food, well the customer needs to know when the store is open. Through out the page this is never mentioned.
  • Call To Action(CTA)

The Website has a few button the user presented with Menu, Take Out, Postmates, and GrubHub.
This definitely has to be more centralized for the homepage. Simplifying the the options helps with user experience, and design.

Example if we know that user wants “Take Out” we then introduce the options the business is offering

  • UberEats
  • Postmates
  • Doordash
  • Grubhub
  • Navigation

The website does not have any navigation. Instead the space is replaced with its social media links.

One odd thing about this websites mobile view is it does have a hamburger menu. But all that's in there is social media svgs which aren't centered but rather at the bottom of the screen.

    Functionality

The website is responsive, layouts are moved around to accommodate content. And as stated before there is a hamburger menu that is to get to the social media links.

    Community Building

The social media’s offered by the website are instagram, Facebook, Yelp.

    Competitors

    Competitors

When looking for competitors I found quite a few beautiful website, most felt incredibly inviting. Of course some of them had their flaws but very few. But are excellent examples on what my clients can strive for in terms of their designs.

    Visual Design

One of my favorite design from our competitors is Milk Jar Cookies, and while they aren’t direct competitors to us, there website is awesome. Awesome bright color combination, with an image carousel on the landing page to grab your attention. Custom drawn images for each section to further give the site uniqueness. While I do enjoy the colors on the website I do fear the light blue color can be difficult to read for some users.

    Content

A website that keeps their content concise and straight to the point is Spare Tires. When greeted you immediately know when the schedule of the restaurant, because of this you can assume what kind of purpose the website has, and that’s to bring people in. As oppose to having a CTA button for a take out partner on the landing page. Spare Tire’s also provides an image carousel on its delectable product. Which further emphasizes to visit the location.

    Call To Action(CTA)

But not ever site manages elements correctly. IN the image about we see the “learn more” which is the main Call to action, however it doesn’t stand out whatsoever to the user. If something like this CTA does not stand out to the user it will likely be glanced over. We’re likely to scan through pages when web surfing rather than reading everything. The container that its also placed in makes it also terribly hard to read.

    Navigation

Another way not to handle important elements like Navigation is to make it insanely small. For example in Supremo’s website the navigation is on the top left. The nav is also dark with an opacity filter on it, with a font weight of ~300. At first glance it’s easy to dismiss or not even recognize that the navigation is there. The navigation however, does have a hover state which makes the opacity a lot more solid, and changes each links background color.

    Functionality

Coming back to Milk Jar Cookie when you first visit the website, the user is presented with a newsletter sign up. To give the user more incentive in signing up their given 10% of their next product. This functionality starts to build a connection between user and business which can later be built upon into a community. You can also search and create a profiles in Milk Jar Cookie’s website.

    Community Building

The social media links are at the footer of Milk Jar Cookies. And I believe its the best designed one out of the bunch, however I feel the company mainly builds its community from its news letter.
